The Analysis and Interpretation of Peter-Lukas Graf’s Sonata in A Major by César Franck/Wei-Ting Wang Graduation Recital

César Franck (1822-1890) is one of an important composer of French in nineteenth century. In 1886, he finished The Sonata in A Major, which was a wedding present for a famous Belgian violinist Ysaÿe Eugène (1858-1931). Nowadays, the sonata have been arranged for many instruments’ version. In this thesis, the study mainly relies on the flute version and supplemented by the violin version.

There are five chapter in the thesis. The first chapter explains the research’s motivation and direction. The second chapter introduces the life and the compose style of César Franck, then go further to know the background of The Sonata in A Major. The third chapter through the version which arranged by Peter-Lukas Graf (1929-) to realize how the violin score arrange for flute to play. The forth chapter demonstrates the analysis and interpretation of each four movement. Last but not least, the fifth chapter summarizes the above research and makes a conclusion.
