This essay (The Gazing of Introspection: the symbolic and expression in the creation process) is graduated student Chen,Ting-Changs discover and finding in his creative paining process from 2014 to 2017. For most people who generally imbedded with the consciousness of duality, therefore, the study is mainly focus on changing the concept of contrary into harmony. To find the possibility of eliminate the antagonistic in essence and how to see them as a whole rather than contradiction. Just like the heading- The Gazing of Introspection, to look inside oneself as one and to look oneself from outside perspective is the opposite way to examine oneself. The study concentrates on definite a method of look and practice it to see how people changes as a whole, such as thought, life, and creation. This observation of changes creates the material of “the symbolic and expression in the creation process”. By using the method of look as a start, the author observe changes happened in one’s minds and use those observation and findings as a foundation to create variety of works. The works are presented through Chinese ink painting and sculpture, which corresponding to each other. The themes are focus on people and nature. In the other words, the works would express the relationship between one and society.

The essay divided into five parts. Firstly, the motivations and purpose will be described. Secondly, the theories for The Gazing of Introspection will be presented. It begins with the discussion of psychology and the myth of symbol to inheritable concept of harmony from I Ching. All the theories are used to interpret the transformation from contrary to harmony. Furthermore, the author will explore two westerns and two eastern artists, who’ works and thoughts are related to the method of look which author has defined, to support the study. Thirdly, it will provide the overview of the creating process. Also, it will discuss the two sides during the process. One is the relationship between draft and final work, and another one is the changing when making the final work. In the end of this part, the author will offer the actual experience of practicing the method of look and emphasize the concept of the study. Fourthly, it will follow the analysis of creation process that mentioned in the third section, and it will be separated into three phrases. For each work, it will contain the discussion of the meaning and artistic form of expression in detail. Finally, it including the conclusion and review of this introspective journey for future prospection.
