This thesis aims at examining five art songs composed by Menotti,Gian Carlo. In other words, Menotti’s “The Eternal Prisoner,” “The Idle Gift,” “The Longest Wait,” “My Ghost,” and “The Swing.”

Major topics included in this thesis are: (a) an introduction of Menotti’s life, professional career, and musical style; (b) a description of the characteristics of the five art songs; (c) an explanation of the meanings of the songs based on critical analyses of their musical forms, and (d) recommendations for ways to render the songs.
