The topic of this research is the piano work《No.3 Ballade opus 47》written by Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin.

The compositional profession of Chopin can be divided into five periods by The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians: 1.In his homeland(1810-1830) 2.New frontiers(1830-1834) 3.The Best Society(1834-1839) 4.Years of Refuge(1839-1845) 5.Twilight(1845-1849). This piano work, composed between 1840 and 1841 and first published in 1841, is very beautiful, eurhythmic and graceful.

Before playing, a player must have some understanding to the background of the composer’s creation, the style of his music.

In order to have a deeper research on the composition of No.3 Ballade, each part of the composition will be analyzed in the fields of the musical from analysis, the tune analysis, the harmony analysis and the subject melody utilization.

In chapter 1 is the introduction. In chapter 2 is the introduction of the composer. In chapter 3 is the brief of composing background; development and evolution of the ballade. In chapter 4 is the analysis and interpretation. In chapter 5 is the conclusion.

This thesis provides the interpreter clear direction, enables the performer to have a more further understanding to Chopin’s No.3 Ballade opus 47.
