Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) is one of the most representable flutist, conductor and composer of the French Flute School. His work, which was strongly affected by impressionism and his teacher – Paul Taffanel, and praised by musicians and music reviewer of the time. He composed prolifically: not only many pieces of chamber music featuring the flute, but also ballets, orchestral works and operas.

Gaubert’ s “1st sonata for flute and piano” which was composed in 1917, was dedicated `to the memory of his dear mentor – Taffanel. The sonata performed with different kind of the timbre and interpretation, which is one of the representative work of Gaubert’ s.

There are five chapters to approaching the subject: in the first chapter will introduce the author’s motivation and researching background; the second chapter will briefly collect Gaubert’ s background from the aspects of history and composing style, and the origin and features of the French School; The third and fourth chapter will start form the composition itself to analyze the form, the harmonic structure, the usage of the motive and also the composing background, and the author’s own interpretation of this composition, will also discuss about the technical issue to play on this piece; the chapter fifth is the conclusion.
