In the mid-nineteenth century, the German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) created more than 260 art songs throughout his life, He was one of the prolific composers of German art songs.

This thesis is to study Brahms’ work, Fünf Lieder (Five Art Songs), op. 105. The study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction that explores the motivation and purpose of research and scope and methods of the research. The second chapter is Brahms' life and style. The third chapter centers around the life of the 4 poets in the “Five Art Songs” to have better understanding of the poets and their styles. The fourth chapter analyzes and elaborates on the five art songs, including the lyrics, rhymes, analyses and interpretations. Chapter 5 is the conclusion and in cludes references.
