Abstract

Lincolnshire Posy is one of the Percy Aldridge Grainger’s (1882-1961) works that enjoy greatest popularity, and it is also the milestone of 20th century classic wind music words index. It has fascinating but innovate expressions in harmony, instrument and technique. In recent years, the wind music has sturdy and stable development and great advance worldwide, and there are coming new research and record unceasingly; therefore, we have great opportunities to enjoy excellent technique and performance by good orchestra. Moreover, due to continuous efforts by scholars and conductors, we could get in touch with interpretations input from various angles, of course, there is no lack of all kinds of truthful but exact or with abundant individualism rendering. However, what should be the original sound of this melody issued from the composer? What problems will we encountered during practical performance? All these lead the author to have the desire to further explore this melody’s creating spirit, instrument and structure’s motives. This thesis will focus on the analysis of practical performance, mainly from the angles of instrument, sentence, structure and creation background, to discuss this melody’s style and interpretation approaches. Furthermore, go deep into the discussion of some problems that might rise from performance, practice, notation or orchestra members. Hoping that through these kinds of works, could offer some solutions and new directions of the performance and interpretation in this melody.
