Clay is a natural material with various forms. From the perspective of design history, Modernism became known for its undecorated form and sober character, the ceramic manufacturing process tend to be automatic, which lends products to be standardized. The natural feature of material was unseen behind the manufacturing process.
Along with the development of Postmodernism, people started against to cheap and mass productions. Droog brought the idea of “Form follows process”, which is the exploration of material and making process. Adding the uncertainty in the making process, to see the uniqueness from the products, form changes through the time, the feature of material revealed eventually. This study apply the design thinking - “Form follows process” to the ceramics making process- slip casting and jigger jolly, tried to put accidental factors in the process, to make unpredictable and unique pieces. This is a exploration of the field between mass productions and handmade crafts.
The study included the experiments of slip casting and jigger jolly, implied the unpredictable factors in two experiments: (1) Drop the clay from certain heights after slip casting. (2) The unpredictable pattern through jigger jolly from colored clay. The study apply these experiments to three collections: (1) Accidental Features Vases. (2) Brocken Texture Lamps. (3) Mixed Colors Bowls. Trying to show the accidental textures and shapes of the clay through these works, reflecting the uncertainty in the material and the process. To develop the diversities and possibilities in product design.
