Fancis Poulenc( 1899-1963) is an outstanding French composer and pianist in 20th century. Deeply impressed by Erik Satie( 1866-1925) fruitful eccentricities, Poulenc joined an ostentatiously self-descriptive musical group called the Nouveaux Jeunes. It was in January of 1920 that Henri Collet, in an article in Comoedia, dubbed the six young composers of this group Les Six- implying their relationship as young French nationalists to the Russian Five. The group comprised Poulenc, Darius Milhaud( 1892-1974), Authur Honegger( 1892-1955), Georges Auric( 1899-1983), Louis Durey( 1888-1979), and Germaine Tailleferre( 1892-1983). Rather than a consciously shared aesthetic, these composers were united by strong friendship.
Fancis Poulenc wrote eight chamber works for piano and woodwinds or strings. They span his entire career, the first having appeared in 1926 and the last in 1962, shortly before his death. Among his most popular and critically admired compositions, they are a standard part of the chamber repertoire. The writing for woodwinds is especially skillful and idiomatic. This dissertation will focus on the last of Poulenc’s work — Sonata for Oboe and Piano.
The first part, biography, examines the sociological, cultural, and musical influences to form Poulenc’s style.
The second part mentions the Sonata for Oboe and Piano, focusing on its form, melody, and harmony.
The last part, musical interpretation, is based on author’s opinion. It deals with musical terminology, dynamics, and oboe technique.Programn
