This paper is focused on the ritual lament in ancient Greek and the music of the French composer André Jolivet, as demonstrated in “Chant de Linos” for flute and piano (1944). This paper documents the aesthetic origins and compositional philosophy of Jolivet’s music, accompanied with a detailed analysis of the musical structure and stylistic practice, which is inspired by the ritual in Greek tradition.
