Fantasia is a duet of erhu and piano composed by Jun-Yi Chow, a contemporary composer. He brings Taiwanese music elements from "The Sky is Dark" and "Olive Tree" into his composition, and subtly blends and develops them. Chow is a Malaysian composer who has won many awards and excels in Chinese music. In creating "Fantasia", Chow hopes to increase the popularity of the contemporary erhu works, by using both Taiwanese compositions and popular music. This is my research theme, as there is no prior study.

I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the background and concept of the piece through interviews with the composer. I was able to further grasp the creative techniques and interpret the works through the analysis of the structure, melody, harmony, and other elements.

I think I better understand Jun-Yi Chow 's use of tonal design, erhu glissando, ornamentation, and overtones, as well as the language expressed in his erhu pieces, which according to him, should be apart from Western violin music. The research brings me closer to the original intention and particular aesthetics of his composition. I hope my research can be considered further for future study and performance.
