Action Research on the Use of Image-Based Virtual Reality in the Schoolyard Tour for First Graders:Using Chung-Yang Elementary School as an Example

The objective of our research is to describe a researcher as well as a teacher who has applied Image-based VR (IMVR) technology for a unit of “Understanding Campus” of daily and general activity for the first grade of schoolchildren at Chung-Yang Primary School, San-Chung, Taipei County, Taiwan, and to combine learning theory with Instructional System Design. The learning web of “Understanding Chung-Yang Primary School Campus” had established through the stage of analysis, design, development, and evaluation etc. Then, it has learning activity, “Understanding Campus” for two weeks to evaluate the result of system to see if it has achieved learning goal as a guideline research.
Here are some conclusions as below through 68 the first grade of schoolchildren at the primary school who have taken a research of understanding campus of learning activity, literature review, observation analysis of schoolchildren, and the result of teacher’s interview.
1. From the system development point of view, Image-Based Virtual Reality of learning system is a considerable technology of development.
2. In the unit of “Understanding Campus”, Image-Based Virtual Reality of teaching application is better than cartoon expression of traditional teaching materials.
3. Instructional System Design (ISD) application mode is an effective development process to apply in the Image-Based Virtual Reality of teaching system development.
4. After ISD into the teaching system, it has obviously increased in learning interesting and concentration for schoolchildren, and it is better than traditional teaching.
5. There are some limitations for IMVR from this system.
6. The speed of network transmission still has some limitations that are a big obstacle of Web-based learning.
