A Study of Gershwin’s Concerto in F

東海大學 / 音樂系 / Author:Jen, Yi-Chien

George Gershwin(1898-1937)was one of the most important composers to introduce American jazz music to the world. His works include popular songs, musicals, piano works and film scores. He also combined elements of classical and jazz music and attempted to create orchestral jazz music. His innovations were not only criticized by the people who were accustomed to classical music, but his ability to compose was also questioned. In order to prove himself, Gershwin decided to compose the Concerto in F. This paper will first study Gershwin’s life, then conclude with his musical style and character. Finally, after analyzing this work and combining the knowledge above, it is hoped that a proper interpretation may be found to perform this work.
