Self‧Appearance interprets the idea that I look at myself when I create my work. The idea comes from French psychoanalyst Lacan’s study, the mirror stage. His study analyzed and improved Freud’s psychology studies. I use the idea of consciousness from psychology field, showing the observation about my inner feelings, my condition and the changes from the society or the world. We usually use language to express and describe these observations. The wandering of the consciousness that I mention in my thesis means the combination of my own experiences, emotion and feelings, and I present this combination in my paintings as my own language. This series work, Self‧Appearance, uses twisted and wave motions images to represent my own life experiences, my emotion and feelings when I feel frightened, uncertain, anxious and pain. I also hope it can create the connection and begin the conversation between me and the audience. Self‧Appearance is about my re-recognition of me and the imagination about how others react when they see my work.

The second chapter talks about the concept of physiognomy and variation. I pick some related artists, discussing their creation process, styles, art work, ideas and the concept of digital images.

In the third chapter, I use portrait painting to represent the idea of Self‧Appearance. Its purpose is to depict myself from different angles and methods. I explore and analyze self-portrait painting, discussing the understanding of myself through my creation.

In the fourth chapter, as for my creation, my paintings are representational and realism style. I use oil painting, acrylic and watercolor as my mediums. This thesis studies the influence of realism and the development of the technology to the traditional painting. It also contains the re-interpretation of my style, the combination of the pictures and the copied images and the outcome of the management of the modern images and the copied pictures. The vague and the clear images stimulate my imagination. With my inner feelings, I capture my emotion in different moment. In the last chapter, it includes the investigation about myself, containing the different point of view about myself when I create my work.
