“Prosper”, composed in 2013; and “Beyond”, composed in 2018, were two compositions that Taipei Liuqin Ensemble entrusted Liu Chi Hsuan to complete. The main concept of “Prosper” focus its Leitmotif on flower blooming image. Different from traditional rondo frame, it takes advantage of rondo structure to describe the unprecedent present and blessing; in “Beyond”, show in fast and slow two-part forms, it creates the mood state of releasing the missed past and courage to chase for future. Two compositions shape the music image as Leitmotif, and up to date, no study has investigated the music form and images in these two compositions yet, providing the author strong study motivation.

The study adopted literature collection, interview method, music analysis and interpretation. Lacking of background research, the author applied interview method to get first-hand information then summed up the creation philosophy and music style of Liu Chi Hsuan. The study also included historical materials of liuqin and the related rondo literature to clarify comprehensively for the author.

In terms of music analysis, the author analyzed the music form of two compositions with their structure and use of motivation, with a few descriptions and investigations on the connections of liuqin solo and Ensemble voice types. Along with personal liuqin play experiences, the author integrated the composer’s mood state, music instruction method and the emotional strength arrangement to propose personal viewpoints.

The clear and repetitive Leitmotif and sounds in these two compositions shape the artistic conception of “flower blooming” and “chasing for future”, and that demonstrate Liu Chi Hsuan’s proficiency in shaping thematic images with sounds. The study mainly discussed the creation philosophy and feature of Liu Chi Hsuan, and comprehensively took research of “Proper” and “Beyond” that composed within recent years, hoping to benefit future researchers and composers who aims to learn more about Liu Chi Hsuan and his compositions.
