I ever heard of such a viewpoint in calligraphy circle “Clerical script was used by slaves in ancient time. It belongs to the lower social class and not worth learning.” Now I read some history of Chinese calligraphy and understand that the evolution of calligraphy style follows dialectic logic: if there is a positive side, there must be a negative side. As for the calligraphy style, a regular script follows a cursive script or a regular script is accompanying with a cursive script. From the unearthed materials, we know that clerical script had begun to take shape in Warring States Period. The regular script at that time was seal script and the accessorial script which could be written quickly was clerical script at that time. In Han Dynasty, clerical script became a kind of regular script and some script which could be written quickly became cursive script at that time. Hence, I would like to point out that calligraphy styles are without class. The cognition of the beauty of calligraphy styles vary subject to different ages.
After taking shape in the Warring States Period, clerical script reached its peak in Eastern Han Dynasty. Due to various elements or conditions in the history, clerical script almost couldn’t be seen in other dynasties except some development in Tang Dynasty, not to mention well-known calligraphers. Until Qing Dynasty, owing to various reasons, clerical script began to develop quickly. Generally speaking, there were some famous calligraphers establishing some schools of clerical script in that age. However, it would be too exaggerating if you say it was flourishing during that period. The calligraphy masters in Qing Dynasty influenced not only the people in that age but also people in modern time. Because Qing Dynasty is close to us and many materials are left, so clerical script learners are more fortunate.
