The opera "Roméo et Juliette (1867)" by Charles-François Gounod (1818-1893) is a masterpiece of French romantic opera and one of the most classic adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. This Opera was a great success when it premiered at the Paris Lyric Theatre in 1867, and then moved to the Paris International Exposition, performing more than 90 performances. It made Gounod famous and leaded him to his career’s peak. At the end of the same year, this work has been staged in the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium and New York, and has become the main repertory of the Paris Opera and the Paris Opera. Today, "Romeo and Juliet" is still one of the main repertoires in French opera.
