Beethoven completed nine symphonies in his lifetime, each symphony is a masterpiece with its own creativity and originality. Therefore, it is the reason why these nine symphonies laid a foundation in the history of music for influence to later composers. The most influential of the symphonies is this Symphony No. 5 in C minor which will be discussed in this thesis. Beethoven inherited the musical form and orchestration of the classical period and expanded them, which significantly improved the symphony form and raised the dramatic tension to a level rarely seen in the classical period.
This thesis will discuss Beethoven’s life and the composition background of Symphony No. 5, with details on its musical structure, harmony, and orchestration. Then, based on the author’s experience, an interpretation analysis is provided including details on how to conduct and rehearse the symphony to its original essence.
