Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was born in Bonn, Germany. He lived through the Classical and Romantic periods; hence, when Beethoven grew up, he was influenced by the Enlightment and the French Revolution. For the society’s unsettlement background, his music made a huge impact on the cultural environment at that time.

The subject of this Thesis, Beethoven: Cello Sonata No. 5 in D Major Op. 102 No. 2, is a late period work of Beethoven, which was composed by Beethoven in 1815-1817. This dissertation consists of five chapters.

The first chapter is the introduction to explain the research of this article, including background motivation, research purpose, research content and structure, and methodology for the research. The second chapter describes Beethoven's life and the background of the composition. In the third chapter, the author will analyze the composition in details. In the fourth chapter, the author will destruct the composition from the perspective of the performer, and makes an in-depth analysis and explanation on the interpretation of the music. The chapter five is the conclusion, which is a summary of all the above research contents.
