An ant, slowly crawling from the corner of the scene, is searching around the room for food. It gradually fades from the screen and left some barely-seen footprints.

The empty room is rather shabby. At the sound of a couple’s intercourse’s moaning, two ants are mating on the ceiling. The creaking walls are like the broken relationship between the couple.

“When do plum flowers blossom?” is a 2D animation piece. Starting from myself, I wish to depict the story of my own. As a female, under the shadow of patriarchy, I wish to speak for women and fight for true equality due to the repeating family stories. Conveying love, belief, freedom, and persisting in doing right things is what I hope people would get after watching this animation; no matter how difficult the dilemma you’re faced with.

This piece features a montage of images, using ant as a ‘sign’. A shred of redness shapes the intertwining love and hatred. Having Taiwanese traditional gender relationship as background, viewing from Feminism’s perspective, combining the expression of metaphors and ‘stream of consciousness ‘, the piece wishes to represent a eulogy of the family history across generations. Meanwhile, combining director’s open viewpoint, expressing the self-awareness of women, it also wishes to promote its’ central ideas: gender equality and defend freedom.

In the hope of conveying the spirit of Feminism - women self-consciousness, this work aims at more self-consciousness and therefore leads to the opportunity of change.
