The Glorious was composed by Jen Chung and commissioned by the National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA) in 2019. It was premiered by the author at the National Concert Hall in 2021. The creation of the work coincided with the 65th anniversary of NTUA in 2020, so the music focused on everything related to school. The Glorious has profound significance to me in the process of learning music. As a student of NTUA, we have deep emotion and thought about this song, which prompts the aim of deeper analysis and research motivation in this study.
There is no relevant literature about The Glorious available on the Internet. The analysis was conducted through the below research methods to construct the information such as the composer's biographic sketch, music learning process, creation techniques, and the information of The Glorious: data collection method, data analysis method, interview investigation method, music score analysis method, audio-visual observation method, We also researched relevant literature on the development of erhu compositions in Taiwan in the 21st century to have a preliminary understanding of the evolution of Taiwan's erhu compositions. At the same time, we analyzed the music and found that The Glorious was presented in line with the current diversified creative period under the creative methods and concepts of the composer, Jen Chung.
Through interviews and analysis, this article analyzed and discussed the main creative techniques used in The Glorious, including musical structure, melody, rhythm, and arrangement analysis. It also includes applications for themes, materials, intervals, beats, rhythms, syntax of erhu, accent using, and sound and balance of equipment.
The whole song contains the theme melody with profound memory points. Through the challenging performance techniques and the application of traditional music materials, the music becomes audible, playable, and rich in the beauty of traditional music under contemporary aesthetics. In addition, the interpretation methods were summarized and integrated through a variety of playing techniques to show the emotions and imagine that the composer wants to express in the song. This study provides a reference for the players who want to play The Glorious in the future.
