Music conducting conveys both the rational and emotional parts of the music to the band via body language and/or body movement. Then the band will do the last mile to show the audience the music based on conductor's understanding and elaboration. This is why music conducting so called as second creation or recreation based on an existing music. As a result, conductor is a very crucial factor that affects significantly on the quality of a music performance and the feeling or understanding of audience toward a music piece.

Zhou Chenglong is one of the most representative ethnic music of China composer. He has committed to seek different approaches of composing ethnic music. His music is rich and dedicated with sensational charm which brings the audience whole new dynamics and vivid imaginations.

"Colourful Forest" is based on traditional Chinese pentatonic mode with impressionistic tonality and harmony instead of traditional folk music style. By using compound meters, "Colourful Forest" can mix different rhythms together to enhance the dancing momentum. As a result, a truly colourful forest can be presented through the music. How to interpret the music with such a sensation and a colourful impression while conducting "Colourful Forest"? The proposed thesis will study and analyse the background, the music form and the conducting interpretation of "Colourful Forest" to discuss and investigate how to present the colourful images through the music and conductor's body movements.

With the proposed thesis, the better bridge will be built between composers and audience to achieve a better mutual understanding.
