The 36-pipe's Sheng Concerto No. 1 was composed by the author and the Union of Chinese Music Ensemble, specifically for the 36-pipe keyed sheng. In this thesis, the author analyzes and explains the creative concepts behind this piece, as well as the techniques used. The concerto contains three movements: the first movement is entitled Jade Mountain; the second, Starry Sky; and the third, Sea of Clouds. The core motive was to use Chinese mode scales alongside twentieth century Western composing techniques. By means of this discourse, sheet music, and visual analyses, the author hopes to provide the listener with a more in-depth understanding of both the creative process and execution of this concerto.
