Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a German composer in the mid-Romantic period. His composition style inherited the spirit of Classical period. He did not only retain the rigorous music style of the Classical period but also incorporate the composition technique of the Romantic period which made his works with a unique style. Brahms had composed more than three hundred Lieder in his life which he used many poetries of romantic poets as lyrics. Most of lyrics of Brahms’s Lieder were by the poet Georg Friedrich Daumer’s poetry.
This thesis explores Brahms’s five selected Lieder which lyrics written by Daumer. The full text is divided into five chapters: the first chapter outlines the research motivation, purpose, scope and methods; the second chapter is the development and form of Lieder; the third chapter explains the composer and the poet's life, Brahms's German Lieder, and the Brahms's Lieder which lyrics written by Daumer; the fourth chapter discusses the composition background of the five selected Lieder and the analysis of composition in order to have a deeper insight into the interpretation of singing; the last chapter is the conclusion of the thesis.
