This thesis for creation was to analyze the formalization of Chinese calligraphy fashions through the concept of “Biomimicry” from ancient Chinese calligraphers’ works and book reviews and deeply explore these calligraphers’ original ideas of their works and inspiration for creation through the contrast between words and images from book reviews. Furthermore, in order to clarify the artist’s thoughts of creation, this thesis for creation would follow the concept of biomimicry and connect this concept to the artist’s creation of Chinese calligraphy.
The connection between the Chinese calligraphy of art and today’s life has gradually lost. In the past, we conveyed messages through words. However, due to the advanced technology, nowadays the way we communicate relies less on words but more on images. Images can boost our understanding. Because of this, Chinese calligraphy has become an art that modern people are familiar but somehow unfamiliar with.
In this thesis, the artist referred the concept of the shift of modern technology and transferred it to his creation of thoughts. The artist tried to appreciate the Chinese calligraphy art from the observation of the Nature in order to make Chinese calligraphy close to modern life, not just words for reading and writing. By doing so, the artist ignited his imagination of Chinese calligraphy and had an ability to make a connection between Chinese calligraphy and life.
In the process of creation, the artist firstly explored “Bionic Images” from strokes, words, and arrangement in terms of three directions, “form,” “shape,” and “structure” of Chinese calligraphy. Subsequently, he mimicked the ways of ancient Chinese calligraphers’ inspiration of creation, and further incorporated his own life experience or the actual observation of the Nature to his own creation, along with the use of technological products, to create multiple artworks of Chinese calligraphy.
Besides, the artist clarified his thoughts of creation through the above study and exploration and tried to find out more possibilities. He also extensively tried different medias in hope to make Chinese calligraphy art closer to our everyday life.
