To classical music, the twentieth century is a brand new era. It inherited Impressionism and made a breakthrough in tonality. With the prevalence of Neoclassicism, the concept of tonal music was not as important as Classical Music and Romantic Music in this era. However, non-tonal melody, irregular figure transformation and more complicated beats and harmony had replaced it. Among them, the most famous French composers were Maurice Ravel(1875-1937), Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992)and Pierre Boulez(1925-2016). They represented a brand new trend in the music circles at that time.
In Paris, many excellent composers composed assign songs commissioned by the examines and competitions of Conservatoirè National Supérieur de musique Paris in those days. For instance, Paul Taffanel(1844-1908), Philippe Gaubert(1879-1941), Adolphe Hennebains(1862-1914), Marcel Moyse(1889-1984), Jacques Ibert(1890-1962), Andre Jolivet(1905-1974), etc. In 1942, Eugène Bozza(1905-1991), commissioned by Conservatoirè National Supérieur de musique Paris, composed Agrestide for Flute and Piano Op. 44 (1942) for his friend Gaston Crunelle1 (1898-1990) in Conservatoirè National Supérieur de musique Paris.
Eugène Bozza was not as famous as other France composers in the same period. The works of his weren’t the dazzling acoustics of the modern music. Instead, they inherited the dim color of France Impressionism and the simplicity of Neoclassicism, which made his works unique. Paul Griffiths (1947-)once mentioned in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians,
“Eugène Bozza’s music showed ‘smooth melody, elegant structure and organization and always considers the exertion of instruments.’”.
Elegant melody and splendid musicianship not only brings the features of flute into full play and push its technique into a higher level, but also brings about a challenge to performers as well as inspires further thinking to the author. Making Agrestide as the title of the study, the author is intended to understand Eugène Bozza’s background, music style, composition and the harmonic analysis through literatures, and make more precise interpretation and discussion about the performance of this work.
