Claude—Achile Debussy (1862—1918) was a major French composer and pianist. He was also a transitional musician between the romantic period and the period of music at the beginning of 20th century. Under the influence of poems and songs of symbolism and paintings of impressionism, Claude Debussy established the music style of Impressionism. He diverged from the traditional strict form of music, and composed with original skills and style to achieve the spirit of music of impressionism. The most significant feature of his creative technique does not lie in emphasizing the clear and definite rhythm and phrases, but an expression of creating atmosphere and emotions. Each of his compositions is not only exquisitely colored but also reveals new Debussy—like tonalities. His contribution laid a foundation for modern music, and his accomplishment can be taken as a model by composers of later generations.
