A Study of Roger Quilter's "Three Pastoral Songs" op.22

Roger Quilter (1871-1953) is a well-know English composer of art songs in the Edwardian (1901-1910) period. Song-composition is the primary part of Quilter’s works. His elegant , unique style made him a important role in the English art songs’ development.

Three Pastoral Songs Op.22 was composed in 1920.The song cycle is dedicate to Monica Harrison. It’s written for voice and piano trio(piano,violin,cello). Using the modern poet Joseph Campbell’s(1879-1944 ) poem, and it was published in 1921.

The study contains the develop of English art songs, English Renaissance and the biography of Roger Quilter and Joseph Campbell.Through analyzing the poem and music of Three Pastoral Songs, to find out the characteristics of Quilter’s art songs. And to know how he creat the ingenious combination between words and music.
