“Follow your heart” Video Creation: Exploring the Social Issue of “High Academic Degree but Low Career Achievement” in Taiwan

文藻外語大學 / 創意藝術產業研究所 / Author:Ta Jen, Hsu

In recent years, many colleges and universities are facing the problem of inadequate number of students, or even a total cessation of recruitment. This problem thus leads to doubts whether the education policy of allowing too many colleges and universities to be established is correct. Graduates from an over-expanded higher education field in the last few years have suffered from a slump in the employment market. Social problems caused by “high academic degree but low career achievement” have also begun to emerge, as reported by the mass media.

Through the “Work on a Less Ideal Job” video creation, the researcher of this study conducted an action research study which includes the following phases: determining the issue to be explored, video creation, first public display of the video and thesis presentation. Aiming to explain the aforementioned social issue, a qualitative research study was employed to analyze the differences between film creation and reality. A theoretical structure was built up via a literature review. It is hoped that this video creation will generate a positive force to reveal this issue, and that this creation will spark more discussions about this issue in society.

Discussions on this video creation include the presentation style of the visual aspect and the emotional connotations hidden beneath the images. Aiming to explain the social issue, this study is expected to generate a dialogue between the image creation and the social issue; in such a dialogue, opinions regarding this issue can be better expressed and the value of this creation can be expounded.
